One of my favourite things that the cinema does are secret screenings. These are early screening of movies that haven’t actually come out yet. I really enjoy these because you are mainly going in blind to see a movie that you have no idea if you will like or not leaving you in suspense. You can try to guess what the movie will be based on the run time on the ticket and the run times of upcoming movies, but you never really know until the title card shows at the start.
For me these screenings have always turned out great as I have enjoyed the movie both times I have gone to a secret screening. The first time I went to one of these screenings the movie was heart eyes. A horror movie about a serial killer who goes after couples who are in love. This was an amazing experience as I would not have gone to see this movie unless I saw it in this situation. Sometimes people see trailers, think they look bad and don’t go to see a movie. But this gives people a chance to see a movie they may not choose themselves which can turn out to be a wonderful thing like in my situation.
The one I saw recently was an early screening of the DC movie ‘Clayface.’ I thought this was amazing as I was actually really looking forward to seeing this movie when it comes out. Having early access to see this movie was an amazing opportunity and an enjoyable experience.
I also see the secret screenings as a great thing because if you enjoy the movie, you can go and see it again. This is definitely good when you have a cinema pass that gives you a ticket for every movie that comes out, because the different titles of the booking make it so you can book the movie you saw again without paying for it as it didn’t count as that movie the first time.
However, it could be argued that it is unfair as there tends to only be one screening of the movie early so not a lot of people can go to it per cinema. Additionally, people who have seen the movie early may spoil the movie for others who did not get the opportunity to see the movie early at one of these screenings. People also might get tired of waiting to see the movie knowing that other people have already seen it.
I don’t see this as the biggest issue as they tend to only do these screenings a week before the movie actually comes out. Meaning that they will only have to wait for a week before it actually comes out.
As an avid cinema goer, I defiantly think that these screenings are a cool addition to the normal screenings and I would love to see them more often.
